Domestic divas

Apr 22 10:40am

Desperate Housewives is the most successful show in the US. It's captured the interest of millions of women for its realistic portrayal of working mums. And now even Hollywood's A-listers are comparing themselves to the lives of the ladies in the show.

These domestic goddesses claim to prefer cleaning and cooking to walking the red carpet. Here are the leading ladies who say their day-to-day lives are all about the drama at home.

Uma Thurman

'I'm very happy at home. I love to just hang out with my children and I love to work in my garden. My washing machine overwhelms me with its options and its sophistication.'

Liz Hurley

'I love ironing! Before my son's birth, I don't think I'd ever ironed in my life. I didn't even know I had an iron. He brought out the housewife in me.'

Reese Witherspoon

'I really like to cook, do the shopping and hang out with the kids on the floor like any other parent.'

Sarah Jessica Parker

'I love cleaning, I love being at home. I like the ritual of it. I like making a home for my family. I like that my friends can come over at any time and there's always food in the house for them.'

Kate Hudson

'I love doing the laundry and cooking dinner. I'm very domestic. I love knitting and making scrapbooks. I put all sorts of stuff in them that means something special to the family.'

Whoopi Goldberg

'I love doing laundry. I even throw things on the floor to make laundry. That's how much I love it.'

Helena Christensen

'Cleaning is the best thing for the human mind and body. Seeing all that dirt being sucked up is instant gratification.'

Kate Winslet

'I cook and feed the washing machine and do all that stuff. I'm great at cooking and I love doing it for my children and my husband.'

Kylie Minogue

'I do like a really good dust, actually all cleaning, in fact. I'll get my kitchen gloves on and have a fantastic cleaning frenzy.'

Kimberley Davies

'Yes, I do housework to avoid studying. Well, to avoid doing anything really!'

Martha Stewart

'A clean, crisply made bed makes the whole room seem more orderly, which makes it less likely that you'll let clothes and papers pile up around it.'

Jane Seymour

'Anything that involves mud and dirt and water thrills my boys. So my best advice is to never let people wear their shoes around the house. It's the only sure-fire way I know to make certain that dirt doesn't get tracked indoors. We have huge piles of shoes on our front doorstep.'

Nicollette Sheridan

'I'm actually trying to be much more eco-friendly about spring-cleaning this year. So I'm sticking with cleaning supplies that are non-toxic. I think they smell great and make my whole house have an incredible aroma.'

Jodie Foster

'I have a lot of cleaning habits - I squeegee out my shower every single time I use it. And I'm just a dictator about my cappuccino maker - nobody else is allowed to touch it because
they don't clean it properly. I also like my towels folded in thirds and when the kids don't do that, I'm like: "Well, use your own towels. Don't use my towels." The way I cope with all my neuroses is to just go to the gym, ski, do yoga or go for a hike.'

Halle Berry

'I do all organic things in my house - my cleaning products and my baby nursery are all organic. I'm a big recycler. I make sure everyone around me recycles.'

David Beckham

It's not just the leading ladies who enjoy a spot of cleaning. As Victoria Beckham reveals: 'If David does the cleaning, he vacuums in straight lines - in a pinny! He's very tidy, and I'm not. Even our fridge is colour-coded.'
