Father, help me. I’m being bullied by the carb cops. They’re calling me a glycaemic missile and telling people not to go near me. I’m the staff of life for goodness sake. Sure, my white varieties are a nutritional non-entity and combined with a bit of butter and some jam or meat, the kilojoules start piling up. But I don’t deserve to be demonised, do I?

THE GOOD WORD
If you’re a demon, then I’m the devil. The low-carb craze is temporary, class is forever. Multigrain foods like you contain antioxidants and are high in fibre. Your starch makes you a great, slow-burning energy source, best eaten early in the day. It’s true, white bread should go the way of the white Australia policy, but it doesn’t matter, because multigrain is the new black.
