Dogs don't spend a lot of time asking "Who am I?" or "Why am I here?" Still, every dog has a history, heritage, roots. The Australian National Kennel Council (AKC) divides the current purebred dog universe into the following seven groups, according to functional origin; each group contains a wide range of breeds, with significant differences in size, temperament, and personality. We suggest you contact your State boy (or the RSPCA) to obtain a full copy of its guidelines. It will also answer any questions you may have about the idiosyncrasies and potential problems of the breed you want to purchase before you make any final decisions.

Where to buy: if you're planning to get a purebred dog, go to a breeder (you can find one through the national parent breed club) rather than a pet shop. Some outlet puppies get little or no love and companionship through the critical first weeks of life and can grow up to be unhappy, unhealthy dogs. With a breeder, you'll be able to visit your puppy's parents and have your questions answered by someone dedicated to raising top-quality dogs. Expect the breeder to ask you questions, too, about your home and lifestyle; many breeders refuse to sell puppies into families with small children or where the dog is left alone inside all day.
