Food Fixes

Stopping those sneaky hunger cravings is easier than you think.
Before you reach for that second helping at the buffet or that packet of crisps at the pub, follow these simple nutrition tips. Trust us. Your belly will thank you for it.

Drink milk after eating steak
Here's a way to feel better about having the occasional juicy steak: wash it down with a tall glass of low-fat milk.

According to research, calcium may reduce the amount of saturated fat that your body absorbs.

Like fibre, calcium binds with fat molecules and helps flush them out through the intestines.

Instead of seconds, chew gum
When sanity dictates that you should stop shoving food into your face at the buffet or dinner table, pop mint-flavoured gum into your mouth.

It changes the flavour of everything and makes that third helping of lasagne almost impossible to swallow.

Eat this, then go out
Munch on an apple before you head down to your local pub.

This will help prevent you inhaling three bags of nuts and a bucket of chips when you sidle up to the bar.

Drink ginger ale instead of cola
Besides containing too many empty kilojoules, colas (including the diet kind) are high in phosphorous, a mineral that can prevent the absorption of calcium.

Ginger Ale is a better carbonated sugar. It has no phosphorous and as many as 125 fewer kilojoules per glass.

Use healthy condiments
One important secret of weight-loss is making bland foods taste good.
Slather the right grainy mustard on a fat-free turkey sandwich and it becomes downright delicious.

Use Worcestershire sauce to spruce up steamed broccoli and other healthy foods or lightly brush barbecue sauce on grilled vegetables and you'll find yourself actually craving that eggplant.

Fire up a finer kebab
Shish kebabs are healthy, manly meals.

To make them perfectly, use twin steel skewers. Two prongs keep the chunks more secure when you turn them on the grill.

Afterwards, put the kebabs in a serving dish, douse them with warm cognac or brandy and light them. They'll burn for a few minutes, leaving juicy meat under a crusty coating.

Freeze mister
One of the easiest ways to improve your diet is to stock your freezer with bags of frozen vegies.

Not only do they provide a variety of nutrients, but they're also convenient for throwing into soups, stews, stir-fries and instant rice dishes.

Frozen vegetables are usually frozen within a few hours of harvesting, so their nutritional quality can actually be better than the fresh stuff.

Throw in the towel
When reheating pizza from the night before in the microwave, place a paper towel underneath to absorb moisture.

This prevents the crust turning into a soggy, doggy-chew toy.

Spend your dough wisely
While browsing the bread aisle, you naturally grab a loaf of something brown - it must be higher in fibre than Wonder White, right? Not necessarily. That dark complexion may be courtesy of molasses or food dyes.

Likewise, a loaf with seeds or oatmeal flakes gracing its top isn't exactly high in fibre either - they could just be decoration.

To be sure that you're a breadwinner every time, look for the phrase "100 per cent wholemeal" of "multi-grain" on the package.

Snack on a stalk
Celery is pretty much the answer for any man whose doctor has told him, "You have high blood pressure; cut down on your salt intake."

Celery's naturally salty flavour can help eliminate your sodium urges, whether noshed raw or added to a wide variety of dishes. And it makes a refreshing drink when blended with apple juice.

As a bonus, it contains potassium, a mineral that's been shown to help fight hypertension.

Why is there no mention of low glycemic index. Low GI foods are being labelled now and for the people you are targetting in this article, low GI bread fits your criteria and is better.

Thanks for the information about the possibility that calcium absorbs fat.

What about drinking water? Research suggests that, often when you feel hungry, you are actually dehydrated and require water rather than food.

My god, you sound like a pack of women, why don't you start eating tofu while you are at it"full of estrogen". If you did what men are supposed 2 do, ie physical labour you would not b worried about some peanuts down at the pub.

Drinking milk with steak is not advisable for a number of reasons: Firstly the combining of proteins is not good. The steak will have a consierable amount of protein and consuming even more protein is far too taxing on the stomach considering protein takes the most amount of time to be digested (some kinds can take even up to six hours!!). Secondly MILK CONTAINS SATURATED FAT!!!! I've never heard a bigger load of it in my life! People should increase their fibre intake as this is all that will b

bind to the fat and draw it out. Hypothetically if the calcium did bind to the fat then this is further reason not to drink milk with your steak. We dont want to lose calcium we want to retain as much as possible. Get your facts straight before giving people wrong information.

Andrewkmartin comments re water as an appetite supressor, as someone who recently stopped smoking, i can vouch for this as i found myself wanting to eat more and more. Drinking water also helps in fighting the craving for nicotine.

mapela5 If you want more calcium, Drink milk when you dont have steak, and take calcium tablets. They are only sayn, if you have low fat milk, which pretty much has no saturated fats and a lot of calcium, that it can help the saturated fats out of your body instead of being stored as fat. If your worried about steak taking to long to digest, have some milk later on as well. The information on this site is for people that need some imput not to be critisized

All great sound advice.... Have any of you ever heard of "chia seeds"? They have everything in them the body needs plus give me more energy than I've had in 20 years. Do a search on "Chia Seeds" better yet try them for a month and feel the difference. Maybe someone should do an article on what they do!

Going off at a tangent, mapela5, you may find it interesting to do some reading on saturated fats. They possibly are not the 'baddies' we have all been led to believe. And while we are at it, landonflere, try a week of being a full-time mum and housewife, and THEN see if you can cast aspertions at women for their lack of physical labours!

The chia seeds work great! My wife takes a handful every morning and she is loosing weight. The seeds absorb nine times their weight in water and swell, therefore filling you stomach, provided you take enough water with it. I find it keeps my energy levels up and improves my concentration for work and I am not so tired in the evenings and can go longer! Its good stuff! Google it: Chia Seeds. You can now get it in Australia.
