Five ways to update your 'do

Feb 12 12:31pm

Whether you're after a total makeover or a slight shift in style, your new hair looks start here. Yasemin Turker asks Robert Maiolo from Maiolo Copeland Salon in Sydney for his tips, tricks and all the trends for the coming season.

1- Add some colour

Whether you're after a subtle or sensational change, an injection of colour can make all the difference. "If you're happy with your style but want to update your 'do, colour is the perfect way to do it" says Maiolo. This season's hottest shades include red and chocolate tones, as seen in La Perla, Luca Luca and Riva, moving away from the chunky highlights that have graced our catwalks of late. If your hue is looking lacklustre, opt for a colour-enhancing product that aims to recharge faded locks, like John Frieda Colour Glaze, $19.99, available in six shades.

2- Adorn your 'do

If your scared of committing to a cut but wear your hair the same way every day, mix things up a bit by accessorising. Whether it's a head wrap, ribbon or skinny headband, your look can be updated in seconds. Hair accessories played a big part in the Spring 2007 fashion shows with designers like Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Valentino all adorning their models with flowers, headbands and ribbons. For a secret stylist's tip, "always keep an eye out for one-off antique brooches as they can really make a statement and look beautiful in your hair." says Maiolo. We love Lady Jayne Bandeaux, $5.99, for a simple yet stylish touch.

3- Go back to basics

The ponytail is no longer just for pre-schoolers, gracing the runways this season with height, bounce and enough glamour to be red-carpet worthy. Stylists at Gucci, Calvin Klein and Dolce and Gabbana kept the front slicked and the back full-bodied, wrapping a section of hair around the elastic to finish off. If you're feeling weary, Maiolo suggests "pulling your hair back really tight to give your face an instant lift, concealing tired eyes for good". When creating your up ‘do, use a sculpting spray with hold like Redken Headplay 12, $22.50, and always opt for a smoothing serum to fight frizz. We love John Frieda Frizz-Ease Original Formula Hair Serum, $14.99.

4- Update an old favourite

For those days when your hair refuses to behave try a bun or chignon for effortless style and runway-ready locks. "Simplicity is the key, so don't be afraid of putting your hair up," says Maiolo. Stella McCartney and Lanvin opted for neat knots with bobby pins holding hair in place. This new take on the ballerina bun is achieved by sweeping tresses back into a ponytail and either twisting or gently tying them into a knot. Hold in place with a hairspray like Aveda Air Control Hair Spray, $39.95.

5- Change your part

If you tend to wear your hair on the same side why not mix things up a bit by opting for the hot-now centre part. This look will accentuate your eyes and give your cheekbones more definition, so there's no reason not to try it. " Without cutting or colouring, changing your part is a great way to update your look and make a statement," says Maiolo. Centre-part styles at DKNY had a sexy tousled look, achieved by scrunching through a leave-in conditioner, like John Frieda Frizz-Ease Daily Nourish Leave-in Fortifying Spray, $16.99. While at Chloe and Elie Saab, hair was parted straight down the middle and finished off with a super-sleek blow-dry and glossing serum, like Tigi S-Factor Dream Drops, $39.95.

I'm an older (50) working woman and every time i think i will have another look to see what you have i am once again dissapointed. I'm sure I'm not the only older person that looks at this site.

Sorry Charlotte but like us all you will be 50 one day and believe me it creeps up faster than you can ever imagine. I'm heading for 49 and agree with the other like-minded ladies - I love looking at all the latest trends for the young but also would like some tips for us young-at-heart ers.

Excuse me Charlotte but I didn't think 50 was elderly!!!

Marie Clair is a fashion mag and Fashion is NOT just about stick thin teenie boppers.

I have to agree with all the ladies about 50 being nowhere near elderly. I am a 19 yr old with a mum in her early 50s and I certainly do not consider 50 being close to old. Also as lovelylilsprite pointed out Marie Claire is about fashion, lifestyle, beauty, etc, if you want to read a teen mag then go get Dolly or Girlfriend. Just one more thing... March issue features an article on age discrimination, it says think it couldn't happen to you, meaning the reader, obviously an article that isn't t

Ok so we agree that we are only as old as we feel (and as young as we can pretend to be lol)

Just for trivia (without searching the web) guess how old our fashion idol Audrey Heburn was in My Fair Lady?

Good on you girl's, and I Mean GIRL'S It's nice to see that the "not so middle Age" women are going out of there way to look good because if you look good you feel good, I see so many women turn "50" and they stop looking after themself, they start wear "sensible" clothing and get a "sensible" hair style, I just hope when i turn "50" i do what you girl's are doing and i just don't do the "sensible" thing.
