Cat Flu, it’s an epidemic

Apr 29 04:02pm

Cat Flu…where do I begin, it’s an epidemic. You know how you feel when you have the full blown flu? That’s what cat flu feels like for our furry friends, so treatment needs to be sought out quickly.

Symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, mouth ulcers, fever and the list goes on. Not a pleasant experience indeed.

It is extremely contagious and once again can be so easily prevented by vaccination. Vaccinate! Vaccinate! Vaccinate! Is all you have to do to avoid horrible things like cat flu.

At my workplace we have 2 full wards dedicated to cats with the flu, it’s not pretty when you walk in there, all you can hear is constant sneezing. The bad thing about cat flu is that once they contract it, they can get rid of it but it will be with them for life. Sort of like a “carrier”. If not treated, it can also be fatal.

If vaccinations are administered, your cat will develop an immunity to the flu and hopefully never have to deal with it. Ask your local veterinarian about cat flu vaccines.

Wow - i did not know that once a cat has had the flu they are a carrier. My youngest cat had the flu prior to us caring for her, but I did not know that she is a threat to my elderly cat. Lucky that we vaccinate each yeat.

My cat has always been vaccinated, he contracted cat flu after staying in a cattery over Christmas. This was the first time he had these symptoms in 5 years. I guess it might be like us, if we get a flu vaccine, we can still get sick.

I still think it's really worth it to vaccinate even if it's not 100% reliable. Cat flu is nasty. My friend's cat is blind in one eye, scarred and has permanent respiratory problems after a life and death fight with the flu. I keep my cats inside and away from other cats as much as possible too.

I'm adopting two cats from an animal shelter. Both of them have cat flu. I'm not sure if I should mix them with my friend's cats even if they are vaccinated. What should I do?
