Transform your spare room into the ultimate multifunctional area

Looking for another room to act as a dedicated work area for home or study, a new play space for the kids, a put-me-up for guests or even a retreat for some much-needed R and R? There’s no need to call the builder. You can rescue a spare room that’s been a dumping ground for out-of-season clothes, toys the kids have outgrown and mismatched furniture, and turn it into a great-looking room with a host of uses.

Write down your priorities for the space and make a list of the things you need. If you have overnight guests regularly, a sleeping option is obviously a must. Perhaps you’re one of the million Australians who work from home, in which case you’ll need good lighting and storage, to help you control the inevitable paper storm, and a desk, also a necessity for a study area for you, your teens or tweens.

Consider lighting.
Soft Roman blinds look lovely on the window and can be adjusted to accommodate more or less sunlight as needed. Choose a style with blockout fabric for when the room is used for guests, and a version with clean lines to suit a range of uses.

Pick your floors.
Flooring is the toughest call to make in a multipurpose room. Timber flooring suits a yoga space or home office, while carpet is a softer option underfoot for the children’s play area or study.

Think about storage.

Clever storage is key to a multifunctional space,” explains interior designer, TV presenter and Plush ambassador Tara Dennis. “Storage ottomans are a wonderful way to hide bits and pieces and to help keep your space clutter free. The comfy cushions allow the ottoman to easily double as a place to sit and kids can use it as a box for their toys – instant play room!”

Choose your furniture.
Think about form as much as function when choosing pieces: the key is to keep your home’s style in mind, such as this provincial-style desk (pictured). “It’s best to avoid ‘office’ furniture and use items that complement the various functions,” says Tara. Compact spaces need pieces that do double duty.
