Want hot ideas for the kitchen that won't hurt your hip pocket? These dollar-saving tricks will transform your space in a flash.

1. Update cupboard doors for immediate glamour

It's a budget-friendly option that saves you replacing all your expensive cabinetry while looking like you've got a whole new kitchen. Now here's a tailor-made choice: Laminex Colourtech gloss and satin doors. Made to almost any size, the doors come in 10 different styles and up to 55 colours. We love pure white or black gloss. Expect to pay about $54/door, depending on the size and style. Visit Laminex for more information.

2. Change your tapware to turn on the style

You'll be amazed at the difference once little nozzle can make. Update from a chunky mixer to a sculptural tap, such as the Dorf Venus Kitchen Mixer for $438 (more at Dorf) to take years off the look of your kitchen. Extendable spray mixers (check out Abey's range) are a favourite right now, as is anything with the spout and tap full integrated. Expect to pay $350 t0 $600 for a tap that's set to be a showpiece.

3. Replace your handles for an instant update

Swap outdated handles for stainless steel. You'll pay about $10 each for D-shaped, architectural, stainless-steel handles such as the ones pictured here. They're available from kitchen design companies, hardware stores and retailers such as Bunnings Warehouse, and IKEA, (02) 9418 2744. It's an inexpensive way to give your kitchen zing.

4. Splash out on a snazzy splashback

Check out the personality added to this kitchen by a glass splashback in vibrant Dulux Burnt Orange. Heat-treated glass comes in at about $330/square metre. Need to cut the budget? "Try using stainless steel or a few inexpensive tiles behind the cooktop, then complement either side with colour-backed glass that isn't heat treated," suggests interior designer Fiona Austin.

5. Upgrade to stainless steel appliances

A flash of shimmering stainless adds instant designer style. Go for a satin finish to avoid finger marks on fridges and dishwashers, and maximise bench and cupboard space by going with a built-in microwave or steam oven. Shop around for a package deal - Simpson combines a stainless-steel built-in oven, rangehood, cooktop and refrigerator for $3300. For more information, visit Simpson.

I think your all on the wrong website. Try BH & G for really good tips for doing your place up on a real budget. Home Beautiful is a bit too upmarket for the average person. I like looking at the pictures. If I see something I like, I'll probably come across something similar at an op shop or garage sale.

I agree with what most of you have said, definitely NOT a makeover on a budget! And the pictures for 2 and 3 are the other way around but who really cares coz after reading #1, I don't think anyone on a budget would want to read on anyway.
