Charged up

Aug 20 11:51am

Ain’t technology grand? All those gadgets that allow us to do just about anything, anywhere without being plugged in – that is, if the batteries are charged

We’ve all got battery-powered gadgets. But batteries don’t stay charged forever – and every gadget has its own unique charger. Enter this one-stop box to charge all your batteries. It costs about $25, takes less than an hour to make and uses one power point.
To make it, start with a power board with about six outlets – many chargers are too wide to be plugged into adjacent outlets. Next, find a plastic utility, tool or fishing box with a tray big enough to house chargers and the power board. You’ll also need Velcro tape or dots and a label maker or tape to enable you to identify cables.

Step 1 Drill a small hole in the side of the box the same diameter or slightly larger than the power-board lead. Choose a position that’s below the lid when shut.

Step 2 Use a fine-bladed saw to cut down to the hole to form a slot. The slot allows the main power lead to come out of the box, even with the lid shut.

Step 3 Drill a series of holes in the tray for the charger leads to poke through. Choose drill sizes that just allow the various plugs through. If possible, drill the holes near the corners of the compartments so there is room for the gadget or the charger in the tray.

Step 4 Attach the power board to the inside back of the box using Velcro dots. Make sure the board is positioned to allow all the chargers and cables to fit.

Step 5 Plug in chargers and feed plugs through holes. Attach labels to plugs so you know what they’re for. The labels also prevent the cables from pulling through.
