Animal knowledge: the Appaloosa horse

Appaloosa horse

The spotted pattern of the Appaloosa coat sets this breed apart. Each horse is as unique as a fingerprint. The most common markings are the blanket pattern (white cover over the hips with a contrasting body colour) and the leopard pattern (white with black spots).

Foals often develop more white areas as they mature. Spotted horses have been around for 20,000 years. They're gentle, intelligent and train well (ideal for dressage and showjumping). Although requiring sun protection, the Appaloosa is hardy, living for 25-30 years.
