Quilt

This very easy quilt is designed to look great in any colour combination. The traditional log cabin design had been upsized to accommodate modern large-scale fabric prints.

Measurements
Approximately 192cm (75 inches) square; block measures 151/2inches square, including seam allowance

Gather your supplies
0.3m x 112cm fabric for centre square repeat; 0.2m x 112cm each of 25 different fabrics; 0.55m x 112cm fabric for binding; 200cm square cotton batting; 4m x 112cm backing fabric; matching sewing thread;  rotary cutter, quilter’s ruler and cutting mat; one skein perle cotton No 8, in red (or a colour to contrast with your quilt)

Here’s how
Cutting
•    Referring to the Block Assembly diagram, for each of the 25 blocks (and cutting each piece in a single block from a different fabric), cut: One centre square, 31/2 x 31/2in (1); one 31/2 x 31/2in square (2); one 31/2 x 61/2in rectangle (3); one 31/2 x 61/2in rectangle (4); one 31/2 x 91/2in rectangle (5); one 31/2 x 91/2in rectangle (6); one 31/2 x 121/2in rectangle (7); one 31/2 x 121/2 in rectangle (8); one 31/2 x 151/2 in rectangle (9).
•    From the binding fabric, cut eight strips, each 21/2 in wide.

Constructing log cabin block
Step 1 Following the numbers on Diagram 1, stitch Piece 1 to Piece 2. Press the seam allowance away from the centre piece 1.

Step 2 Stitch Piece 3 to the side of the previous unit, as shown, and press the seam allowance away from the centre.

Step 3 Proceed in this manner, adding pieces to the block in numerical order, working around the block in an anticlockwise directions. Press all seams towards the outside edge (away from the centre) after each addition. Make 25 complete blocks in this way.

Assembling blocks
Step 4 Lay your completed blocks out in five rows of five blocks. Twist each block around so that the longest strip in the block faces in a different direction in adjacent blocks (Diagram 2). This will cleverly avoid having to match any seams!

Step 5 When you are happy with the arrangement of your blocks, sew them together, one after another, into rows of five blocks. Press all the seam allowances in one row in one direction, and all the seam allowances in the next row in the alternate direction.

Step 6 Now sew the rows together, one after another, matching the seam lines as carefully as possible. Your quilt top is complete!

Assembling quilt and quilting
Step 7 Remove the selvedges from the backing fabric, cut it in half crosswise and join lengthwise. Back should measure at least 3in (8cm) bigger on all sides than quilt top. Press seam allowance open.

Step 8 With wrong sides together, layer quilt top and backing fabric with batting in between. Smooth all creases and tucks and carefully baste layers together.

Step 9 Quilt as desired. This quilt has been outline-quilted by hand with red perle cotton in concentric squares, firstly around the centre square, then around the square formed by pieces 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and lastly, just inside the edge of the block itself (shown as the broken line on the Block Assembly diagram).

Binding
Step 10 Following How to bind your quilt instructions, join the eight 21/2in binding strips into one continuous piece, using diagonal seams. Press in half lengthwise and use to bind quilt. Label the back of quilt with your name, date and other relevant details.

Hi. I'm new-ish to quilting so followed the cutting instructions from the pattern in the magazine. Once I started sewing the pieces I realised the measurements in the mag were wrong. The cutting instructions on the website are correct. A bit disappointing but I'll just add some strips.
