Tree ferns

Jan 08 01:07am

There are two main types of tree ferns and both are spectacular according to Noni Hazlehurst.

Watering tip: regular watering is needed throughout the warmer months and occasionally in dry winters. In hot dry, weather direct the waer into the crown so it trickles down the trunk.

Feeding tip: feed with blood and bone or slow release fertiliser in spring and midsummer or use liquid fertiliser monthly, during the growing season.

Pruning tip: restrict pruning to cutting off the old dead fronds beneath the crown. In exposed situations the dead fronds may protect the trunk from sunburn and aid humidity. Do not discard the fronds but crunch them up for mulch.
