A Book for Knitterbugs

Nov 27 01:39pm
This beautifully presented book, full of coloured pictures of articles suitable for children to knit, has been reproduced by Rolling Hills Primary School, Victoria.

These patterns were designed to help adult knitters teach children to knit. The first project is a very simple bookmark pattern where a knitter can cast on 6 stitches and show the child how to knit and complete the article all in the first session.

Experienced knitters are needed to explain how to do purl and plain stitches, casting on and off and how to increase and decrease which means shapes can be made. The patterns have had extra explanations written into them to make it easier for new Knitterbugs to understand. Rewards come in the form of quickly completed knitted articles.

Knit a bug!

Many of the basic shapes can be made into a variety of new shapes and creatures. A tiny square, such as the Bookmark, made three times, can be a jumper for one of the dolls. Larger squares become buildings, diamonds become the wings of birds or kites, hexagons become turtles, crabs or fish. There are patterns for dolls, suitable for use in school projects made from a series of cords knitted on Endless Needles.

Author, Jen Morton

"I have been teaching Art and Craft in Primary schools for many years. In 1993 I was searching for some knitting patterns suitable for use with the young students and found them hard to come by. This search ended with a series of three beautiful pictures knitted by our students with help from parents, teachers and the local community (photographed in the book). We discovered a knitting artist in Joan Huggan who joined in our enthusiasm and directed this enormous project. We've invented patterns and made new ones, changed them around for a new use, and decorated them with embroidery."
