DMC stranded embroidery cotton: dark yellow (742), medium yellow (726), light yellow (3078), dark gold • 70 cm of fine cord (420), medium gold (833), light gold (3046)
Crewel needles: mixed pack size 5/9
Small embroidery hoop
Dried lavender
Here's how1 Fold the linen in half and press lightly to make the base line.
2 Using a sharp lead pencil, trace the design onto the fabric by taping the design and then the fabric to a window. Position the base of the design 3cm above the crease line. Trace only the stems and mark a dot for the rose centres and base of the leaves.
3 Overlock around all the raw edges.
4 Place the linen into the embroidery hoop and work the design. Work the two full roses first. The roses are worked in two strands of cotton. Work the centre in dark yellow (742) cotton in bullion stitch of eight wraps; the inner circle in medium yellow (726) in bullion stitch of eight wraps; and the outer circle in light yellow (3078) in bullion stitch of nine wraps.
5 Using one strand of dark gold (420) cotton, embroider the stems in stem stitch and the calyx in two fly stitches.
6 For the buds, use two strands of medium yellow (726) cotton for the centre, working downwards with a bullion stitch of seven wraps, then six and five. For the outer part use light yellow (3078) cotton in bullion stitch of eight wraps.
7 Work the leaves in detached chain stitch, using two strands of medium gold (833) cotton for the large leaves and one strand of light gold (3046) for the small leaves.
Making up the bag1 Press the finished embroidery on the wrong sidc only. Place the right sides of the bag together, allow a 1 cm seam allowance and machine the side seams.
2 Turn down a 4.5cm hem allowance and press.
3 To make the casings, sew three rows of machine stitch around the hem, placing the first row 5 mm above the overlocked edge, the second 1 cm above that, and the third a further 1cm above.
Finishing1 Using two strands of light gold (3046) cotton, feather stitch around the top of the bag and up the side seams as far as the casing.
2 Undo the stitching of the side seams between the first and second rows of stitching on one side and between the second and third rows on the other side. This is to thread the cord through.
3 Cut the cord in half. Thread one half through one opening and out through the same opening. Thread the other half through the other side opening and out through the same opening.
4 Attach the beads to each end of each cord.
Place the lavender in the bottom of the bag with a small amount of polyester filling on top, then pull the cords to close the bag.
