The story in the magazine is about turning old linen, such as napkins, sheets, bedspreads, hankies and doilies, into pretty homewares with a taste of yesteryear.
I wanted to give you a few ideas about where to find these, outside the usual op shops and markets.
I decided to google them and found quite a collection available on eBay. There was a 4 kg lot of assorted linen with beautiful lace and embroidered trims, and the starting bid was just $5.
I had never bid on e-bay, so first of all I had to register; then I was ready to start. As the day progressed I received regular updates on the price. It was exciting and nerve racking. $10, $11, $11.50 ... it went on and on.
Thinking I was in with a chance and really wanting to secure these pieces for the story, I kept bidding up to $36.
With only 25 minutes of the auction remaining, I left my desk to attend a meeting. On my return the auction time was up. I had been outbid on the last 2 minutes!
The treasure trove of gorgeous linens had sold for only $36.50. I was devastated.
But, at least it proves there really are bargains to be had at online auctions, and in an era of recycling, they can be a great tool for sourcing old fabrics to craft into beautiful projects for your home.
Until next time,
Francesca
