Better You

Future wishes

The following questions could be the most important ones you’ll ever ask your parents. And, once you have the answers, they’ll help you to better look after your parents in their old age.

1. Who has power of attorney? In the event of either of your parents being declared medically unfit to manage their own affairs, ask them who is to have power of attorney. Then get this document drawn up by a solicitor.

2. Where are the financial papers? You need to know where the personal papers are kept, including bank details, investments and insurance. Tell your parents you don’t need to know the details.

3. Where do your parents want to live? There will be a time when your parents’ home will be too much for them to look after. Plan alternative accommodation options with them, sooner, rather than later.

4. How do your parents want to live? Ask what’s important to them. Perhaps they’d still like to garden or play golf, or live near the beach or be closer to the family.

5. What kind of funeral? A good time to bring this up is when you hear of a sudden death. Ask your parents: ‘I wonder if they had funeral arrangements?’ Then ask: ‘How do you envision yours?’

6. How are possessions distributed? A will is the only way to determine who inherits what. If your parents are resistant to write one, remind them it will help prevent family upsets.

7. Who are your parents’ doctors? Make a list of their health-care providers – doctors, pharmacists, therapists and dentist.

8. What medications do they take? Prevent a dangerous interaction with future treatments by listing medications and dosages. Include minerals, vitamins and allergies.
