To re-invent a room without a whole lot of fuss, all you need to do is focus on the accessories and opt for an uplifting colour scheme anchored by neutrals.

1. Choose leaf-print accessories in zesty greens. Avoid visual overload by combining them with a few plain pieces in similar shades.

3. Create a magical mood by arranging clear-glass candle votives on a large tropical leaf, for when the sun goes down. Small details like this complete a room and help cement its character.

5. Create a seat in the sun simply by extending your windowsill. Add a plump cushion and you have a great little window seat.
6. Add interest to a plain white sofa. Stick to one big bold floral print that features hot, summery shades, then coordinate with plain, latticed, embroidered or sequined designs in pale and neutral colours.
7. Customise a plain white lampshade with a band of ribbon - try grosgrain or velvet - in a colour to match the vivid fabric colours seen elsewhere in the room.

8. Pay attention to the details because it will make your living room that much more enjoyable. Select one piece of furniture as a statement, such as a curvy turquoise armchair, and choose artwork to coordinate with your summer scheme. Aim for a casual look by leaning art against the wall.
10. Clear your bookshelf and paint it a colour identical to the wall so it merges with the background. Display colourful pieces to reinforce your scheme. Remember, bookshelves work well in alcoves or recessed areas. However, if you're opting for a freestanding unit, go for one with open sides in a white or alabaster shade to keep the mood of the room informal and light.
