Solution: animals grieve at the loss of a loved one, much as we do. Most behaviourists advise allowing the remaining dog time with its mate when it has died. But how long? My suggestion is around 12 hours. Some dogs react very differently to others, but most seem to have the need to 'feel' that a life has been completed. If you opt for burial in the yard, it's advisable to cover the grave with something heavy to prevent the other dog digging. The grieving dog will often spend hours by the grave, but some pay no attention.
What should you do?
Act normally is the simple answer. Your surviving pet will react to your emotions so try to be strong, and maybe play a game. Occasionally, a pet may become extremely depressed and may require medication, but a day or two without eating is to be expected. The best therapy of all is often replacement. But allow time for grieving before getting a new dog, and try to introduce a puppy.
