25 in 25 quilt

Dec 07 10:16am

This beautiful and simple bed quilt in elegant tones of black, white and grey, made for a 25th wedding anniversary, was inspired by an antique 25-patch quilt, made in 1897. As you can see, the choice of fabrics shows just how timeless patchwork can be.

Measurements
Finished quilt top: 80in (203cm) square; finished block: 10in (25.5cm)

Gather your supplies
25 'fat eighths' (9 x 22in/23 x 56cm) of assorted light to dark grey cotton prints for blocks; 6m x 115cm white-on-white cotton print for blocks, sashing, border and binding; 6.6m x 115cm cotton backing fabric; 220cm square quilt batting

Here's how
Note.
As this quilt was originally designed in the traditional imperial measurements, instructions are given for working in inches to maintain accuracy. All given measurements include 1/4in (6mm) seam allowance. Sew with right sides together, unless otherwise indicated.

Cutting
To make the best use of your fabrics, cut the pieces in the order that follows. The sashing and border strips are cut the length of the fabric (parallel to the selvedge). The measurements are mathematically correct, but you may wish to cut your sashing and border strips longer than specified to allow for possible sewing differences.

STEP 1 From each assorted grey print, cut five strips, each 2 1/2 x 10in. From white-on-white print, cut two border strips, each 5 1/2 x 80 1/2in; six sashing and border strips, each 5 1/2 x 70 1/2in; nine binding strips, each 2 1/2 x 42in; 20 sashing strips, each 5 1/2 x 10 1/2in; and 125 strips, each 2 1/2 x 10in.

25-patch block (make 25)
For each block, you will need five matching grey print 2 1/2 x 10in strips and five white-on-white print 2 1/2 x 10in strips.

STEP 2 Referring to diagram 1 for placement, stitch together three matching grey print 2 1/2 x 10in strips and two white-on-white print 2 1/2 x 10in strips to make a strip set A. Press the seam allowances towards the grey print strips. Cut the strip set into three 2 1/2in-wide segments.

STEP 3 Referring to diagram 2, stitch together three white-on-white print 2 1/2 x 10in strips and two matching grey print 2 1/2 x 10in strips to make strip set B. Press the seam allowances towards the grey print strips. Cut the strip set into two 2 1/2in-wide segments.

STEP 4 Referring to diagram 3, stitch together the three strip set A segments and the two strip set B segments to make a 25-patch block. Press the seam allowances towards the strip A segments. The pieced 25-patch block should measure 10 1/2in square, including the seam allowances.

Constructing quilt centre
STEP 5
Referring to the 25 in 25 assembly diagram, lay out the twenty-five 25-patch blocks, the 20 white-on-white print 5 1/2 x 10 1/2in sashing strips, and four white-on-white print 5 1/2 x 70 1/2in sashing strips in nine horizontal rows.

STEP 6 Stitch together the pieces in the block rows. Press the seam allowances towards the sashing strips, then join the rows to make the quilt centre. Press the seam allowances towards the sashing. The pieced quilt centre should measure 70 1/2in square, including the seam allowances.

Adding border strips
STEP 7 Stitch a white-on-white print 5 1/2 x 70 1/2in border strip to opposite edges of the pieced quilt centre. Press the seam allowances towards the border.

STEP 8 Stitch a white-on-white 5 1/2 x 80 1/2m border strip to each remaining edge of the pieced quilt centre to complete the quilt top. Press the seam allowances towards the border.

Assembling quilt and quilting
STEP 9 Cut and piece the backing fabric to measure at least 3in (8cm) bigger on all sides than the quilt top. Press all seam allowances open. With wrong sides together, layer the quilt top and backing fabric with the batting in between. Smooth out all creases and tucks and baste the layers carefully together.

STEP 10 Quilt as desired, by hand or machine. The original quilt is machine-quilted with a feathered medallion design in the centre of each 25-patch block and stippled in the four white patches nearest the centre of each block. The feathered medallion design is repeated in the sashing and a traditional feather design has been used to quilt the border.

Binding
STEP 11 Following the step-by-step instructions under Perfectly Bound (on back page), join the binding strips into one continuous length and stitch the binding to the quilt as shown.
