Wooden candle holders - make your own

Mar 20 10:16am

Make these lovely candle holders in just four steps.

Gather your supplies

Hardwood timber offcuts (3 blocks of about 10, 15 and 20cm high); sandpaper; Organoil Natural Wax and Polish; aluminium tin sheeting or empty aluminium can; blunt old scissors or wire cutters; long nails; pliers; hammer; pencil; protective gloves; 3 pillar candles

Here's how

Step 1 Sand offcuts to give them a smoother finish. Using a soft cloth, apply wax to all surfaces.

Step 2 Put a candle on aluminium sheeting and trace around base to make 3 circles. If using an aluminium can, wearing gloves, cut off the top and bottom, then down its length with old scissors or wire cutters. Flatten can with a hammer. Trace around candle bases.

Step 3 Wearing gloves, cut out circles using pliers.

Step 4 Position each circle on a block (they form a barrier between the wood and a lit candle). Hammer a nail into the centre of each circle. Cut off the head of the nail with pliers. Twist and push candle onto the nail.

Caution: Never leave lit candles unattended.
