Our latest wine tips cover the pleasure of bubbly, and the benefits of screw tops.
Nutritionists agree breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Wine writers agree brekkie can be greatly improved with a splash of bubbly - preferably on weekends, holidays and special occasions.
Sparkling wines lift your mood and go surprisingly well with most morning foods. Bubbly is brilliant coupled with fresh fruit, smoked salmon, croissants and other sweet pastries. It also goes well with cold meats, cheese and all types of eggs - boiled to Benedict. A small glass or two should be enough with brekkie, so a bottle will do 4-6 people.
Share the cost of French Champagne, from $45-60, or for half the price, enjoy a good local fizz like Jansz, Taltarni, Trilogy, Fleur de Lis, Chandon, Brown Bros, Croser, Clover Hill or Sir James. There are pink varieties, too, with just a touch of extra flavour, and a glass would look great beside the bacon!
Missing the pop. When they appeared en masse a few years ago, they were sniffed at and distrusted. Now, they are an easy and familiar part of our lives, and our corkscrews are going rusty in the drawer. We're talking about twist-off screwcaps.
There are winemakers who still prefer cork, usually on expensive reds designed for the cellar, but now there's no doubt screwcaps are just the thing for everyday whites and reds. They keep wines fresher with their full flavours intact, and you never see the sort of spoilage that used to affect up to 15 per cent of bottles under old-fashioned cork.
