Extra tip: try lace.
Take a rectangle of cotton lace (length determines circumference). Along one long edge, cut around lace motifs.
Work a gathering stitch along the other long edge. Bring short sides together, overlap and pin to hold.
Put a balloon inside and inflate to fit. Pull gathering thread until opening is closed, then knot. This will form the base.
Put the balloon in a cup or bowl with the base facing up. Arrange gathers to level base. Coat with fabric stiffener, then remove pin.
When set, pop balloon and remove.
