Bowled over - fabric bowls

Dec 18 04:19pm

There's no complicated sewing involved in making these attractive holders. You simply saturate cotton fabric with fabric stiffener, and wrap it around a bowl which acts as a mould.

Vases and other vessels can also be used, just ensure they are wider at the mouth than the base, to make it easier to remove the mould once the fabric has set.

Find detailed instructions hereĀ

Extra tip: try lace.

1 Take a rectangle of cotton lace (length determines circumference). Along one long edge, cut around lace motifs.

2 Work a gathering stitch along the other long edge. Bring short sides together, overlap and pin to hold.

3 Put a balloon inside and inflate to fit. Pull gathering thread until opening is closed, then knot. This will form the base.

4 Put the balloon in a cup or bowl with the base facing up. Arrange gathers to level base. Coat with fabric stiffener, then remove pin.

5 When set, pop balloon and remove.
