Bird feeder

This is a super simple project which will delight both your feathered friends and family.

The table gives the sizes and materials. The colour scheme is optional.

You will need:
40 mm countersunk screws
30 mm nails
Glue
Wood filler
Sandpaper
4 screw hooks
2 m (or more) chain
Split ring
Primer/undercoat and gloss paint

No Item Materials Length
2 Roof 190 x 19 western red cedar 340
1 Platform 190 x 19 western red cedar 340
1 (halved) GableĀ  150 x 19 western red cedar 150
1 Roof ridge 19 x 19 pine quad 340
2 Pillar 19 diameter dowel 300
1 Platform edge 30 x 6 cover strip 1200

Here's how
The triangular pieces that form the `gables' are made by cutting the 150 x 150 mm piece from corner to corner. Bring them in 30 mm from the ends of the roof and screw them in place. The gap in the roof apex is filled by the quad, which should be glued in place with waterproof glue to ensure it doesn't leak. The pillar is screwed to the triangles. If you flatten the dowel a little where it butts against the triangle with a chisel it will stop it rolling. The tray corners are best cut with a coping saw and sanded or rasped smooth.

Make sure you thoroughly prime the feeder and then finish with a good quality acrylic paint. Alternatively, use a wood preserving stain.

Remember: Feed the birds with the right kind of food - no sugar.
