Shadow chaser

Mar 11 12:59pm
Problem: A dog that constantly chases any moving shadows both inside and outside the house.

Solution: This and chasing of reflections from shiny objects are surprisingly common problems in the dog population. Very often the condition starts quite innocently by the use of a torch or more often a laser pointer. The behaviour becomes entrenched, unfortunately because the owners usually laugh at the dog's antics.

Regrettably, this tends to reinforce the goings on and the dog-becomes even more intent on its efforts to catch whatever is the 'shadow'. It is a prey behaviour carried to the extreme, that eventually becomes uncontrollable. It's an obsessive, compulsive condition that's 100 times worse than nail biting.

Stopping it requires a tactic that immediately stops the behaviour and then provides the dog with an alternative. In this case we banged two saucepan lids together to stop the chasing, then asked the dog to sit and rewarded this behaviour, before playing a game. Unfortunately, heavily entrenched behaviours like this often require medication as well.

DO you have any information re dogs with other types of obsessive compulsive disorders? As my dog Roxy, continually licks her left foot between her toes, it is red and irritated, being constantly wet. I have used creams from vet, keeping it bandaged or using Elizabethan collar so it can heal and it does. I remove her bandage/collar, she's straight away licking and on it goes again. Would love any ideas you have. cheers Helene

We have Maltese [profane]zu cross and he is 11 months old and is like a hyperactive child, would this medication work on him or is he too young. If it would assist with the training can you please tell us what the medication is so we can talk to our vet.
Thank you
Rod

Our 7 month old Kelpiex waits all day for the lights to come on and then follows the shadows. It is so funny and she is so serious about it. Should we see it as a problem and if so what can we do to stop it?? We would love to hear from you or have you visit!! Thanks Anne Stringer

I have the same problem as noelenem2539. the breed is the same too. My vet said some dogs have foot fetishes but it's driving me nuts and his feet are always wet,and sore. He also seems to be alergic to something and gets a rash which he then scratches vigorously. Some help would be welcome.

I have a 9 month old French Bulldog who is deaf. Unofrtunately she is even more obsessive than the case above which is fear is exaccerbated due to allocating her full attention to her sight. What medication was the above case on and any suggestions on how to deal with this in the case of a deaf dog
