These cute creatures, which propel themselves along by a dorsal fin, are something a little different for your home aquarium.

Keeping seahorses is almost as simple as keeping fish - in fact, they're a type of fish. They have a snout-like mouth and suck up their food. They don't have teeth or scales, and use their tails to grasp foliage as they move around.

It costs about $350 to get started with a 90-litre tank (the bigger, the better) to house four seahorses, substrate, decorations, artificial sea salt, water purifier, filter, pump, water-testing kit, hydrometer and heater. Food comes frozen in trays for about $8.

For more information on keeping seahorses and setting up your home aquarium visit Seahorse Australia, you can also buy seahorses on line by visiting their website or a specialist aquarium store.

You can also see the seahorse aquarium we visited in Tasmania.
