Let's taste some wines, and look for their distinguishing flavours and features.

Shiraz

Our most popular red grape variety produces wines rich in fruit flavours.

This wine, from one of Australia's best shiraz areas, the Barossa Valley of South Australia, has a bouquet of sweet ripe plums with overtones of coffee, chocolate and spices. The palate has supple blackberry flavours which linger, combining with velvety soft tannins.

Try: Yalumba Barossa Shiraz.

Great with: Rare roast beef, venison, kangaroo.

Cabernet sauvignon
A close second in popularity to shiraz. Coonawarra, on the eastern border of South Australia, is cabernet sauvignon's spiritual home.

The bouquet has dense red-berry fruit characters with some leafy touches. The palate reveals powerful blackcurrant fruit with firm tannin structure.

Try: Rouge Homme Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Great with: Rack of lamb and aged hard cheese.
