Knitting hints

Nov 29 03:33pm
Here are some great knitting tips from Sue Ridsdale, Wynnum West, Queensland. Thanks Sue.

"I have not knitted for some years and knitting squares for Wrap With Love reminded me of some of the lessons I was taught by my mother-in-law, she was an excellent knitter and I was lucky to have her for a teacher. I hope these hints help other people to turn out professional looking garments with the same pleasure I learnt them. "

1. Basks
Cast on for bands in knit and purl to make the bands stretchy. If it is K2 and P2 or K1 and P1, you just cast on as per instructions taking the thread to the back or front as needed.

2. The first stitch
Always slip the first stitch and always knit the last stitch regardless of pattern instructions. This gives a tighter neater edge to sew up making the garment hang better. This type of edge also sews up easier on sleeve cuffs. You can sew them flat by picking up the edge bobbles leaving no lumpy seam when the cuffs are turned back.

3. Add in another colour
Add in different colours on the second stitch not the first. This makes it easier again to sew up and to sew in the threads.
