DIY Scratching Post

Nov 29 03:11pm
Our post is designed to take the place of a tree and can be whipped up in no time.

If you love your cat and your furniture you'll certainly appreciate our scratching post - and hopefully reduce the temptation for the cat to sharpen its claws on your sofa. The scratching post is tall enough for the cat to jump at and has rope wound around the top to help keep claws sharp.

You'll need:
Timber post 800mm high x 100mm square
Pine base 460 x 460mm x 20mm thick
Carpet offcut
Contact adhesive
Drill
4 x 50mm countersunk screws
2m x 10mm rope
7 clouts
Cat toy
Dried catnip

Here's how:
1. Attach carpet to the base and lower half of the post with contact adhesive. Trim the edges.

2. Centre the post on the base. Pre-drill the pieces and screw them together.

3. Wrap and glue the rope to the top half of the post. Secure both ends of the rope with clouts.

4. Leave a 35cm rope overhang and attach a cat toy to the end.

5. Sprinkle catnip on the carpet section.
