DEFINITION

The following is a list of tools used to manicure nails.

DESCRIPTION

1. EMERY BOARD
This is the basic tool necessary to file nails. The emery board is flexible and should be long.
There are two sides:
the rough side is used for initial shaping
the other smooth side is used for rounding off the shape. Always use an emery board in preference to a harsh metal file.

2. NAIL SCISSORS
Nail scissors should always be sharp with pointed ends for preference.
Remember to cut the nail in a squared-oval shape and polish off any jagged edges using an emery board.
Ask your Pharmacy to show you a selection of quality nail scissors.
Remember that it is always better to buy a quality pair of scissors as they will stay sharp a lot longer.

3. ORANGE STICK
They are approximately 10 cm long and are made of wood. They are cut at an angle at the ends to allow you to gently push back the cuticle of the nail. It is suggested to put a cotton wool ball at the end of the orange stick when pushing back the cuticle to lessen the danger of any damage to the sensitive cuticle.

4. NAIL BRUSH
A wooden nail brush with pure bristles is the best to use on the nails. Many brands of nail brushes are made using nylon bristles. They are not recommended as they may cause damage to the surrounding tissue of the nails.

5. NAIL BUFFER
This is an extremely helpful tool to help achieve a professional manicure.
The buffer is made of a pad covered with a soft material such as chamois leather attached to a handle.
The nail buffer is used to:
smooth out ridges on the nails
give nails a healthy shine
remove any surface stains
prevent splitting and flaking
allow nail enamel to adhere more effectively.
