Laser Hair Removal

Tuesday, Apr 22, 2008

DESCRIPTION

The lasers used in Laser Hair Removal produce a high energy flash of light that passes through normal skin, is absorbed by the hair follicle and converted into heat, destroying the follicle. The procedure can be used to remove unwanted hair from all parts of the body.
Laser Hair Removal is an ongoing process that requires multiple sessions. Face, armpits and bikini areas require approximately 3-4 treatments at 6-8 weeks apart, while other areas of the body will require 3-4 treatments every 3 months. However, some people will not respond to the treatment at all. Laser Hair Removal should not be used on people with darkly tanned skin or those who are prone to the formation of thick scars (keloids). The treatment works best on dark hair and may be less successful on brown, white or tan hair.
The treatment feels like a rubber band snapping the skin and a temporary stinging sensation will be felt afterwards.

POST PROCEDURE NOTES

- Following the procedure, the area that has been treated may be red and puffy and sometimes blisters may form. This usually lasts around 12-24 hours. Applying ice on and off for 20 minute intervals for 3 hours following the procedure minimizes the reddness and puffiness that can occur.
- There may be some hair left in the follicles following the procedure and this can be rubbed off gently in the shower or bath.
- It is recommended that you use sunscreen for any treated areas exposed to the sun.
- Lightening of the skin can occur following the procedure.
- Laser Hair Removal can cause flare ups of cold sores in people who are prone to them. Taking anti-viral medication for a few days during and after treatments can prevent this.

PREPARATION

- Your skin and hair type will be checked and you will be asked to provide some information about your medical history to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for Laser Hair Removal. A test patch may be performed to determine the best laser setting for your skin type.
- You should avoid all forms of tanning and use sunscreen for 4-6 weeks before treatment.
- Laser Hair Removal can cause flare ups of cold sores in people who are prone to them. Taking anti-viral medication for a few days during and after treatments can prevent this. Cold sores should not be present during Laser Hair Removal treatments.
- People who have used Accutane for acne should stop using this 6 months before they have Laser Hair Removal treatments.
