Breast Changes

Tuesday, Apr 22, 2008

DEFINITION

Breast Changes include a lump, lumpiness, change in the shape of the breast or dimpling of the skin, an area that feels different, a discharge from the nipple, pulling in of the nipple (nipple inversion) or pain. Although the majority of Breast Changes are not breast cancer, it is nevertheless important that all Breast Changes are investigated by your Doctor.

DESCRIPTION

Breast Changes may be caused by one of the following:
- Hormonal changes which make a woman's breast feel different at various times during the menstrual cycle. Hormonal changes may cause the breasts to be swollen, painful or tender at different times during the menstrual cycle.
- Fibroadenomas. A fibroadenoma is a smooth, firm breast lump made up of fibrous and glandular tissue. They are more common in young women and may become tender just before a period or grow bigger during pregnancy. Fibroadenomas may need to be removed if they continue to enlarge. Fibroadenomas are not cancer and rarely change into breast cancer.
- Cysts. A cyst is a fluid-filled sac that may feel like a painful lump. Cysts are common in women aged 35-50 and those taking hormone replacement therapy. Cysts can be drained if causing pain. Simple cysts are not cancer and do not change into cancer, although in rare cases, cysts may have a cancer growing in them or close to them.
- Breast cancer. Breast Changes may be caused by breast cancer, although it is important to remember that in more than 95% of cases, Breast Changes will not be breast cancer.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

As with all conditions, consult your Doctor for diagnosis and advice.
Your Doctor may perform a clinical breast examination and take a personal history, order imaging tests such as a mammogram or ultrasound and/or an aspiration biopsy or incisional biopsy. See the Breast Cancer Diagnosis topic for an explanation of these procedures.
